RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The Nevada Museum of Art staff is celebrating. They have recently received a national award from popular travel website Trip Advisor.
"We just received a 2014 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence," said Amanda Horn, Communications Director for the museum.
Horn said this honor is even more special because it's based on consumers' reviews. "When the people who visit here say that you're awesome, it means a lot more than us telling people that we're great."
The museum has been part of the local arts community since 1931.
"We're one of the oldest cultural institutions in the state of Nevada," Horn said.
It is also the only accredited art museum in the state, which means it is trusted with rare and very expensive art. "We've had a van Gogh," Horn said. "We had a Warhol exhibit in recent history."
Right now, the museum has Doris Duke's Shangri La, an exhibit featuring Islamic works of art. Horn said having international pieces helps visitors get a sense of foreign cultures. "If you're a Reno local, it will really instill a sense of Nevada pride in you. You can walk through here and go 'Wow, that's a really amazing place and it's right here in the Biggest Little City.'"
Starting August 2, they are really celebrating Nevada pride. The 36th Star exhibit will honor Nevada's journey to statehood and history.
"The star of the show will be here toward the end, October 30 through November 2," Horn said. "We will have the original Emancipation Proclamation here on loan from Washington DC, from the National Archives. That is going to be quite a show stopper."
If you would like to check out the museum, it is free the second Saturday of each month, which would be this Saturday in July. The museum is open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
