Going all the way back to the booming days on the Comstock when the rush for gold and silver attracted people by the thousands hoping to find fortune in Nevada. "The communities of Gold Hill, Silver City and Virginia City, they were just bustling," said Sheryln Hayes-Zorn of the Nevada Historical Society.

The state is starting a year long celebration which will kick off officially on Nevada Day, October 31st. "We're going to showcase all the traditions, all the great events that we have from Gerlach all the way to Laughlin, Nevada," said Governor Sandoval.

The Governor has appointed a special committee to oversee the planning and fundraising for dozens of special events and exhibits, even a sesquicentennial license plate you can buy at the DMV.

There are also plans for a traveling museum which will visit schools all around the state. "That's a wonderful opportunity to reach all the students of all ages and embrace Nevada's history," said Hayes-Zorn.

News 4 is joining in the effort working with state officials, the Nevada historical society, and people just like you to bring you stories about Nevada's rich history, the people who built this state, and the people who continue to help make it a great place to live.
