RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A local soccer player is on the trip of a lifetime.
Kelsey Waller is a University of Nevada student and 2013 McQueen High School graduate. He joins four others from across the globe as winners of Gatorade's "Unreal Around the World" video contest.
"I want to play professional soccer," Waller said. "That's my dream, but if I can't do that I'd like to be a sports doctor for a professional team. So if I can't make it, I'd like to help people who can make it."
Waller has been playing soccer since he was 3 years old. Now at 19, he is one step closer to his dream. "I just wanted to show that I'm a hard worker. So I put in me just doing my normal workout: push-ups, running, doing sprints, juggling, shooting."
Waller said he thinks it was his creativity, not his skills, that got him noticed. He couldn't believe it when he won. "I wanted to cry. I was just thinking 'Wow. This is going to be an amazing opportunity.' I get to play with the best clubs in the world."
He won a two-week trip to visit professional soccer teams in five countries and the chance to take the field with them. "Actually training with the first team coaches, I'm going to see what the expectations are for those players, see how quick and technical it is, and it's just going to really allow me to understand the game a little better."
Gatorade is also going to put them through the same physical tests pro athletes complete. "We're going to get our own personalized Gatorade formula," Waller said. "I'm excited to see how my body works and what I have to do to make it run more efficiently."
Waller said he hopes others will chase their dreams like he did, even if it seems like a long shot. "You've just got to do it. There's no point in not trying. If you lose, it's fine. It doesn't have any reflection you. It's just they didn't pick you. I got lucky."
