RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- The 2014 Nevada football season officially kicks off Saturday against Southern Utah.

This year, fans will experience a change in how they leave football games. "Meeting with athletics and getting some feedback from surveys that they've done, some of the issues were traffic," said Commander Todd Renwick of the University Police Department.

Renwick said a lot of the feedback they got was many fans had problems leaving football games. So to try and fix that, new traffic flow protocols are in effect this football season. "We've kind of set up a traffic pattern that is going to hopefully in essence flush the garages a little quicker, so we can get them out onto the streets and get them out from there."

The main change is off North Virginia Street where all four lanes will be used in one direction after games. So depending where you parked, you will be directed either south or north. "If you're coming onto campus and you're going to leave from 17th Street, you're going to go north, anything south of 16th Street are all going to go south."

Renwick said changes to ease postgame traffic will likely begin in the second half of home games, depending on circumstances. "Understand that when you're exiting the campus, we have you exiting in a direction that is theoretically going to get you to where you want to go quicker, it may not be the same way you came in, but if you follow the traffic patterns, it’s probably going to get you home quicker."

Renwick also wants to remind fans to have fun tailgating at Nevada football games, but do so responsibly. Officials also said they will monitor traffic flow and adjust for future games as necessary.
