CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval is such an overwhelming favorite to win re-election that the focus in the June primary has switched to the race for an office that doesn't usually get much attention.

State Sen. Mark Hutchison and former state Sen. Sue Lowden are battling for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. The outcome could be pivotal to Sandoval's political future.

That's because the lieutenant governor would succeed Sandoval as the state's chief executive if Sandoval left midterm.

Sandoval has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. Senate or even for vice president in 2016. Moving on would be easier for the Republican if he knew the governor's office would be occupied by someone who shares his views.
