CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- State officials say the number of Nevadans claiming their abandoned property has drastically increased compared to last year.
After the State Treasurer's Office published its annual unclaimed property list in newspapers, there were more than 11,000 claims in June; this is an increase of 5,000 compared to June of 2013.
The state maintains a searchable database of assets such as uncashed payroll checks, unreturned utility deposits, and unused gift certificates. Businesses that can't track down the rightful owner of these assets after three years must turn them over to the state.
