RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) --An annual report on American kids released Monday revealed Nevada is one of the worst states in the country for overall well-being of children.

The Kids Count Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows Nevada is ranked 48th behind New Mexico and Mississippi.

How it works, the report uses 16 indicators of child well-being, organized into four categories including: economic well-being, health, education, and family and community.

Overall the report shows there have been gains in health and education nationally, but there have been troubling setbacks in the economic well-being of children...

According to the report, the rate of children living in poverty increased to 23% in 2011.

Something Washoe County School District Board member and UNR professor Howard Rosenberg says is not surprising news.

According to Rosenberg some 2,500 students are homeless in Washoe County.

"We all need to work together not just the schools, but all the other agencies that have the ability to help. What are we doing economically? Can we employ our kids part-time to get them prepared?" Rosenberg says.

Rosenberg says although the release of the rankings are frustrating, it will hopefully encourage city and state agencies to work together to combat the problem.
