While Don Sibery is the new interim CEO at Renown he's quick to point out he is not the most important person at the hospital.

"It's the people that are facing patients.  The caregivers right at the bedside.  That's where the exciting work is," Sibery told News 4 in an exclusive interview.

Sibery has overseen a number of hospitals in the midwest.   He says over the years he's developed a management style that focuses first and foremost on taking in what others have to say.    And whenever he gets the chance, like he did during our recent visit,  he seeks out input from employees.
Don says that's just who he is.

"I'm transparent.  I guarantee people I will listen," Sibery said.

Sibery is not a candidate for the permanent CEO position. His assignment here is a temporary one, and he'll head back to his home state of Michigan once a new president and CEO is hired.   But while he's here, he promises action.

"One thing I've been telling people, I am not a caretaker.  We're going to keep moving forward," he said.

But he offered few specifics, saying that will take some time.  Sibery says he likes what he sees at Renown so far.

"My initial impressions are, fabulous facilities." he told us.

One thing Sibery won't do is dwell on the past.  The resignation of four top executives at Renown including President and CEO Jim Miller last month, came on the heels of a joint anti-trust investigation by the Nevada Attorney General's office and the the Federal Trade Comission, and a lawsuit accusing Renown of breaching the contracts of local cardiologists.  Renown settled the lawsuit, agreeing to pay the cardiologists nearly five million dollars for damages and legal fees.

It was an ugly chapter for what is widely considered a first rate health care facility.

Sibery says the challenge now is to get back to focusing on health care.

"It happened in the past.  I'm choosing , as the interim CEO to be accountable for the whole history of this organization. We learn from it and we move forward," he said.

The Renown Board of Directors is conducting a search for a permanent CEO.   Officials at Renown told us there was no update yet on that process.
Sibery says he expects to be in Reno for about a year.
