RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Almost two years ago, the Reno Fire Department and the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District de-consolidated, mainly over financial issues.
But Wednesday, initial discussions of a new Regional Fire Department are taking place among city and county elected officials.
Washoe County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler said preliminary meetings are focusing on possible ways Washoe County and Reno can better spend taxpayer money, not just about a new Regional Fire Department. She said three meetings have taken place, so far, that discussed better ways services can be provided in our area, including the possibility of having a new consolidated fire department.
Berkbigler also said she does not believe it's necessary to have more than one fire department in our region. Although the county is pleased with how Truckee Meadows Fire operates, creating a new consolidated department may provide better fire services.
"Is it financially feasible, would it be better for the continence if we closed one of those fire stations and put the firefighters in one station, so that the TM firefighters and the Reno firefighters are in the same place," Berkbigler asked. "I mean, those are the kinds of economies of scale we've been discussing."
Berkbigler said the commission will decide next Tuesday whether or not to keep moving forward on the idea of a new consolidated department. News 4 reached out to a City of Reno spokesman for reaction about these new discussions, but an interview was declined.
