RENO, Nev. (AP) — Phil Nevin, a major league veteran who spent the last three seasons managing Detroit's Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, has been named the manager of Arizona's Triple-A Reno Aces.

Nevin replaces Brett Butler, who recently accepted a major league coaching position with the Miami Marlins after managing the Aces all five of their seasons since joining the Pacific Coast League in 2008.

The Aces announced the hiring Monday of the 42-year-old California native who starred at Fullerton State before the Houston Astros made him the first overall pick in the 1992 draft.

Nevin hit .270 with 208 home runs and 743 RBIs in 14 seasons with the Astros, Padres, Tigers, Rangers, Angels, Cubs and Twins. The Mud Hens announced the last week of the season they wouldn't be renewing his contract.
