RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- If you ever park Downtown or in Midtown, you will have more payment options soon.

Over the next few days, the City of Reno is installing about 900 SmartMeters in downtown parking areas. The high-tech, solar-powered meters allow customers to use a Visa or Mastercard when paying for parking.

City officials say they paid IPS Group just under $400,000 for the new meters. "The City of Reno decided to go with the single-space meters, which we're very similar to what we had before. We received a very good bid and the company has approximately 120,000 meters out nationwide. So their reputation is one of the primary factors," said Associate Civil Engineer Kurt Dietrich.

If you do use the new credit card option, you are required to spend at least $1, which equals one hour.

I agree with kookykev. I also feel that wifi enabled parking meters are just begging to be hacked.. All those credit card information waiting to be stolen :(

Sounds like a new opportunity for credit card criminals to me.900 new locations to check your fraudulent cards without having to worry about those pesky cameras they have just about everywhere else. And skimmers, gas stations with a modest number of pumps have the biggest problem.Try 900 pumps in various locations.Bad idea AGAIN
