STEAD, Nev. (KRNV & -- When temperatures rise, families look for affordable ways to beat the heat. There's a new splash park in North Valleys where you can do just that, and it opens Saturday.

Friday three 5th grade classes from Stead Elementary got a sneak peek of North Valleys Water Splash Park.
"I think this is pretty fun," 11 year old Mikel Parsons said. "I've been looking forward to this all week."

Mikel is testing out the new water park. He and his classmates splashed, sprayed and played around with the 20 different aviation-themed water features.

The 7,100 square-foot park cost 3.2 million dollars - paid for by the sales of some Sierra Sage Golf Course groundwater rights.

Washoe County Commissioner Bonnie Weber said it's something the area has needed.

"It's been a dream of the people in this community to have something for the kids like this," Weber said.
As a long-time North Valleys resident, Weber wanted it for her family too.

"I really had hoped that I was doing this for my children," she said. "My children are all grown, but now I have a grandson that lives right here in the neighborhood."
"It's like close to my house so I can walk here and stuff," said Xavier Wilson, Weber's 11-year-old grandson.

So far the kids seem happy with their new place to play.

"This is like the best park ever," Xavier said. "Now I'm going to have super fun in the summer."
"I'm definitely going to be looking forward to get wet, get cool, have fun in the sun and beat the heat," Mikel said.
