RENO - (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- "Operation Backpack," carried out in conjunction with Rounds Bakery, is being extended for another day.

Rounds Bakery matched every dollar given as a tip and has already collected more than $500. The money raised is being used to load up new backpacks with school supplies to give to homeless children in the Truckee Meadows area.

RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Volunteers of America's Operation Backpack is in full swing to help provide homeless youth in the Truckee Meadows with new backpacks and school supplies. The goal is to raise at least 1,200 backpacks to be given out to homeless children. Last year the fundraiser was able to distribute 600 backpacks and now they're looking to double that.

Sandy Isham with Volunteers of America says the need is only growing in our community. The Washoe County School District Children in Transition Program expects to serve at least 3,000 homeless children in the community this year.

With the recent report out of the Annie E. Casey Foundation showing Nevada is ranked the worst in education and one of the worst for the well-being of Children, Rounds Bakery owner Sean Cary says the need comes as no surprise. Cary says Rounds Bakery is a proud to partner up with Volunteers of America and they have made their business one of the donation drop-off locations for Operation Backpack.

To take it one step further, on Wednesday, July 23, Rounds Bakery is challenging their customers to offer a tip with their purchase. Rounds will not only donate the money raised, but they have promised to match it and donate to Operation Backpack.

Operation Backpack runs June 23 - July 25. The backpacks will be given out to registered children on Saturday, July 26 at Reno Aces game.

Volunteers of America invites the public to support homeless and low-income children and their families by bringing new backpacks filled with school supplies to one of the operation backpack drop-off locations listed below. Donations will also be accepted by appointment to Sandy Isham, Volunteers of America, 335 Record St., Reno, 775-322-7143.
