Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Volunteers of America have partnered with local businesses to help collect backpacks and school supplies for homeless children in Washoe County.

As Washoe County's homeless population rises, so does the number of homeless students. Washoe County School District officials say there has been a 37 percent increase of homeless students in the last three years. During the 2013-2014 school year there will be 3,000 homeless children in the Washoe County School system.

In an effort to prepare these students for the year ahead Volunteers of America and local businesses are collecting backpacks full of school supplies.

On Wednesday, July 31st the kids will get to pick out their very own brand new backpack full of supplies during a celebration at the shelter at 335 Record Street in Reno.

So far only about 500 backpacks have been donated. If you would like to get involved you can drop off backpacks at any of the below locations before Wednesday, July 31st. Donations will be accepted throughout the year at the shelter.
