RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge is helping raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics, where developmentally disabled athletes compete in sports and become part of a team.

The Special Olympics runs solely on donations, and events like the Polar Plunge lets Nevadans give back to a great cause. Not only does all money raised stay in Northern Nevada, but it will help provide one season of sports instruction and competition for a Special Olympics athlete at no cost to the competitor.

Tina Loomis brings her daughter Angela to Coconut Bowl in Sparks, where a group of Special Olympians meet every week. Loomis said she is a big believer in the Special Olympics. "It's a phenomenal organization, it goes over all demographics. Their hearts are just as big as the sky, and they just want to be recognized (so) that they don't have to sit at home and do nothing."

Bowling coach and local program coordinator Tanja Ramociotti said she has seen first hand how bowling helps with the confidence of special needs athletes. "The more they come the more they make friends, they have a good time, they start to socialize more, and they feel comfortable about sports in general."

The Special Olympics is giving 14 Nevada athletes the opportunity to show off their skills at the national level in New Jersey. Nevada Special Olympians have qualified for track and field, as well as bowling.

The Polar Plunge will take place on in Zephyr Cove on Saturday, March 29. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the plunging starts at noon. Join the News 4 team who will be participating or make a donation now. For more information, head to the Polar Plunge website.
