The University is committed to the intellectual and personal growth of its students as scholars and citizens and the promotion of a learning environment where these goals can be achieved safely and fairly. Greek organizations share in this responsibility as well. The chapter had previously been placed on probation by their alumni board for behavior that violated the University and the fraternity’s expectations and code of conduct for members. The suspension and loss of chapter recognition is for a period of five years.
An unrelated matter involving the Nevada chapter of Pi Beta Phi sorority was prompted by two anonymous calls recently placed to a national anti-hazing hotline alleging hazing at the local chapter. The concerns were not reported directly to the University. The national organization of Pi Beta Phi notified the University. The national organization and the University are collaborating on our respective, continuing investigations. Last week, the national organization notified the University that it was suspending activities of the local Pi Beta Phi chapter until mid-February while the investigation continues. The University supports the actions of the national organization and continues to collaborate with the national organization on this matter.
RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity chapter at the University of Nevada has been suspended by the national chapter.
Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity told News 4 is a statement: "The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Board of Directors voted to suspend operations the Epsilon-Iota chapter at the University of Nevada, Reno. The closure is effective as of November 19, 2012. Every attempt will be made to return to the campus as soon as possible.
Under the terms of the suspension, the chapter members may not represent Lambda Chi Alpha, display any of the Fraternity’s emblems or symbols, or gather in the name of Lambda Chi Alpha.
Fraternity representatives and university officials are working in partnership to ensure this matter is handled appropriately. Additionally, the university is issuing Lambda Chi Alpha a Memorandum of Understanding to confirm both parties' intentions to have the Fraternity return to the campus."
Also in the statement Nick Zuniga, director of chapter services, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity said, "Unfortunately, we are unable to offer the proper undergraduate experience at this time... We greatly value the Epsilon-Iota alumni and our collaborative relationship with the university. We look forward to our return to campus."
Last week News 4 reported the Pi Beta Phi sorority at the University of Nevada was suspended due to allegations of hazing.
