RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A grant to go towards a program that helps disabled veterans get involved with paralympic training is up for possible approval at the Reno City Council meeting Wednesday. The program is called Fit But Not Forgotten. Not only do local veterans get to train like paralympians they learn the skills of how to be fit for life.

The $15,000 grant was awarded by the United States Olympic Committee for the U.S. Paralympics Intergrated Adaptive Sports Program. Twice a week the program is run at the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center.

"I think it's not only a great rehab tool as far as physical wellness, but mental wellness as well," City of Reno Therapeutic Recreation Specialist April Wolfe says. "They make plans to work out together so they continue it and I think it's really important."

Wolfe says the program costs about $30,000 a year to continue. The grant will help ensure the program sticks around.

Army veteran Wallace VanAllen is one of the more than 150 disabled veterans who's taken advantage of the program. So far he says he's lost 25 pounds by training regularily and eating healthy. He says he has some sciatic nerve damage after his time serving in the Army Air Born Division in Italy, but training has inspired him to push past the pain.

"As long as I'm not going long, long distances I'm okay and losing the weight has definitely made it's easier on my knees that's for sure. It's just time in life to pull it together and they've set me in the right direction," VanAllen says.

VanAllen tells News 4 his goal is to lose another 50 pounds.

The Reno City Council meeting is at noon at City Hall on East First St.
