RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- Following the conclusion of Wednesday's Reno City Council meeting, all seven Council Members -- including Mayor Bob Cashell -- are expected to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has become a social media phenomenon in the past few weeks, raising money and awareness for The ALS Association. The group challenge will take place at City Plaza around 3:45 p.m. The exact time of the event depends on when the City Council meeting is officially adjourned, according to the City of Reno.

As of Tuesday, according to the organization's website, The ALS Association has received $22.9 million in donations from July 29 to August 19. That's compared to $1.9 million during the same time period last year.

Donations will be made on a voluntary basis by individual Reno City Council Members.

Just imagine how much they could raise if everyone donated their $1.29 for a bag of ice to somewhere that mattered, not the grocery store.

If you participate, please donate to a charity that helps PEOPLE with ALS. Drug companies do not need your money to study it. This is a great campaign and it's raising tons of awareness and money. It needs to go to the right place.
