Reno High Student Wins National Voice of Democracy Scholarship

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & mynews4.com) - Emily Meany, a senior at Reno High School has been named a winner in the 2013 National Voice of Democracy Program and recipient of the $2,000 Cramer/Harrell Scholarship Award.

Meany was among a number of winners from across the country who participated in The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and its Ladies Auxiliary sponsored the Voice of Democracy audio-essay scholarship competition. The 66th annual program requires high school student entrants to write and record a three to five minute essay on an unannounced patriotic theme. The theme for this year was "Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?" All national scholarships totaled $152,000.

According to a press release from the competition, Meany plans a career as either a biological engineer or astronomer and she was sponsored by VFW Post 3396 and Ladies Auxiliary in Sparks, NV.
