TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies are investigating a boating accident that killed a 41-year-old Reno, Nev., man when two Jet Skis collided at Boca Reservoir over the weekend.

The victim was identified as Brett Jaffe, an 11-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He died shortly after Sunday afternoon's collision with another Jet Ski ridden by 32-year-old Jacob Racki of Nevada City, Calif.

Nevada County sheriff's deputy Dave DeVogelaere told the Sierra Sun the two men were racing on a "ski slalom course" and were passing buoys when they collided.

The deputy says Jet Skis are permitted at the reservoir about 25 miles southwest of Reno but racing with buoys is not. He says an investigation continues but alcohol and/or drugs do appear to have been a possible factor in the fatal crash.

This story was first reported in the Lake Tahoe Bonanza, then later copied word-for-word by the Tahoe City Trib, RGJ, and news media outlets. People who report the news have a duty to check their information and no one has. News 4, and all the news outlets reporting this story should be ashamed. This is no way to honor a fallen hero. RIP Brett.

After the funeral today I found out that there are some big inaccuracies in the media story. They were NOT racing as the story says and alcohol so far wasn't a factor as the other man in the accident was not drunk nor near the legal limit. Good job news 4!!

I still wonder why it took the media 3 days to report this. Horrible article on a great man.

You call yourself media? How can you report a story and not check your facts. There are so many erroneous facts in this story. You should be ashamed. Fire your fact checkers! Brett was a wonderful man, full of life with a great love for everything he did, his friends, his beautiful wife, and family.
