RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Reno Police contacted News 4 Thursday afternoon about a new phone scam happening in our area.

Because they are becoming increasing prevalent and believable, an elderly woman in Reno recently fell victim to a scam that cost her $6,000.

The woman received a call from a person claiming her granddaughter was being held in a Tennessee jail and that she needed to send money immediately for bail.

There was no truth to the claim, but the woman did send money to the fraudulent caller.

If you receive this type of phone call, there are some things you can do to protect yourself:
        1. Ask for the name of the person calling and what agency they are from
        2. Ask for the person's contact info
        3. Contact family members after the fact to verify any claims
        4. When in doubt, don't send money; contact local law enforcement instead
