RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) – Aside from a little jet lag, Reno's very own Olympic Champion, David Wise, is living it up back at home. Friday night the red carpet for the gold medal winner at a VIP party at The Peppermill Resort and Casino.
“You never expect anything. So coming home I was excited to see my family and see the people who are close to me, to be embraced by the community, and be held up so high. It’s amazing” Wise expressed to News 4.
One of News 4’s favorite moments were two kids daring each other to go up to Wise for pictures. The mom finally got involved and gave them the push they needed.
Wise, celebrating with his wife and family was honored with a proclamation from Nevada Senator Dean Heller and was even given a “ski to the city. City manager Andrew Clinger explained Reno is a 24-hour city and therefore a key didn't make sense. So the first ever ski was handed out.
Wise has been on about every talk show and has even visited Disneyland since winning. News 4 asked him how he's managed to stay grounded.
“My family, it’s always been about my family and I have a feeling that God has had a hand at keeping my humble as well. He never let me succeed too young too quickly. It’s been a long road to get to where I am but at the same time I’ve learned a lot on the way.”
Wise is one of 15 area athletes to compete in Sochi, but he is the first Olympian to have been born, raised and still resides in the city of Reno and win gold.
