CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A Nevada Department of Transportation project to repave and enhance the Mt. Rose Highway is scheduled to reach a milestone with early completion of paving on the bottom section of highway, according to a press release sent by NDOT spokesperson Meg Ragonese.
Paving work from the base of the highway at South Virginia Street to Timberline Drive in the Montreux area is scheduled to complete on July 3, with minor roadside work continuing over the next few weeks. In just 15 working days, the project milled and removed 300,000 square yards of old asphalt and placed down 39,000 tons of new asphalt.
“This paving work on the bottom section of highway was originally scheduled to complete in late July, so this is well ahead of schedule. We will continue to upgrade the drainage facilities on the two-lane section of highway above the tree line, with the removal and repaving of the existing roadway planned for mid-August,” NDOT Resident Engineer Shane Cocking explained. “This is a narrow, mountainous section of road, and we ask the understanding of motorists as we complete that paving as quickly and safely as possible.”
As the project progresses, single lane closures and delays of up to 30 minutes are to be expected on the two-lane section of highway above the tree line. Work will take place both night and day Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons.
Ultimately, the approximately $10 million project by contractor Granite Construction will repave and improve Mt. Rose Highway from the highway’s base in south Reno to the Mt. Rose summit. Rumble strips will be installed to enhance driving safety in residential areas at the base of the highway. Safety enhancements will include nearly 18,000 linear feet of new guardrail, as well as rock removal and mesh cover to reduce erosion-caused rock fall on one roadside slope near the summit. The project is currently scheduled to complete next summer.
Motorists are asked to obey traffic controls and drive at posted construction speed limits, or slower as necessary for conditions.
