TRUCKEE, Cal. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - Surf's up in North Star California Resorts's annual “Spring It On Pond Skim,” .as daredevils try to skim 60 feet across the freezing waters of a man-made pond.

Most skimmers didn't make it across, including News 4's Ryan Kern and Alex Margulies.

“It’s much more difficult than it looks,” says Kern. “We didn't get enough speed, but it was fun.”

Crossing the pond isn't the name of the game, says North Star’s Steve Zoval.

“They dress up in costumes, and so it’s not necessarily to make it across,” says Zoval. “It's really just a fun event.”

Competitors were judged for style, costumes and ability for their chance to win North Star gift certificate prizes during the luau themed event. Only a few managed to stay dry and win bragging rights.
“Bomb it. Just go straight, and really go fast,” says James Huang, one of the few who made it across the pond. “That's it. It's not that hard. “

For competitors and spectators alike, the pond skim is a fun way to enjoy winter snow and spring sunshine all at once.
