Students and their parents came together Thursday night to learn about a number of careers at the sixth annual Career Planning Family Learning Night put on by the Washoe County School District.

The free session was full of information for students and their families interested in college and/or high-skilled occupations.

Students and parents had their choice to attend short breakout sessions to hear from local professionals.

Speakers on career topics included: technology, green energy, public safety, building trades, hospitality, finance, education, medical, and NCIS (Nevada Career Information System).

The district believes part of preparing students for college and highly-skilled careers is opening their eyes to the professions that are out there.

"Because as parents sometimes we don't know how to support our kids and we might not know how to do math with our kids at home or we might have never been to college. We are here to help parents understand some of that information and take it back to their families to support their kids to be successful," Administrator for the Department of Family-School Partnerships D'Lisa Crain says.

Saturday, there will be a "Family Access Day" geared towards first generation college students and helping families to support their kids as they prepare to go to college.

The event will be held at the University of Nevada, Reno at the Joe Crowley Student Union from 9am to 3pm.

If you missed this event there are more to come.
