RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- In honor of a local philanthropist, Sierra Vista Elementary School will be rebuilt and renamed.
An assembly was held at the school today to make the official announcement. As a tribute to Dorothy Lemelson's commitment to education, Sierra Vista will be renamed the Dorothy Lemelson Stem Academy.
Lemelson created the Lemelson Education and Assistance Program, or "LEAP" grants.
More than 200 Washoe County elementary school teachers have earned their master's degrees through the program.
Sierra Vista will be closing at the end of this school year and the new school will be open sometime next year.
In order to preserve the name Sierra Vista, the school garden will be named the Sierra Vista Community Garden.
