CARSON CITY, Nev. ( & KRNV) - Local reaction to the shocking events in Newtown prompted Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong to setup precautions around local schools. Deputies were stationed nearby at each and every school in  Carson City today as parents dropped off and picked up their kids from school.

Although, there has been no threat made to schools in the area, Sheriff  Furlong says their presence has an important a message to the community. "We want to reassure them we take our childrens safety very seriously in Carson," said Furlong.

School police in Washoe County School District say they are operating as usual today.  Deputy Chief Jason Trevino says the district is lucky to have police on hand on a normal basis.  Trevino says school police are making their presence more visible.

Arming teachers is not as easy as putting them thru a CCW course. Firearms proficiency come from repeated practice and hours of schooling. As a combat veteran, retired law enforcement officer, parent of elementary age school children in the WCSD and a CCW and tactical firearms instructor, I M more than willing to step up and do my part to help. However, I would not be in favor of arming EVERY teacher. Quite honestly, guns are not for everyone, and a gun in the hand of someone unwilling to use it who is incapable to be of the mindset to run TOWARDS gunfire instead of away from it has no business possessing a firearm to begin with.

If the School District would invest in a voluntary program to have some Teachers trained (Front Sight Firearms Training Institute) and armed at each school, they'd have an on-site Security force that wouldn't cost the taxpayers for more Police or pull Officers from their usual duties to do nothing at schools all day of the off chance of a killer showing up. The firearm trained Teachers might get a little added pay for the added responsibility, but nothing close to what it'd cost for more Police,or what it would add in risk to other parts of town while the existing Police work in the schools. BTW-the armed Teachers can keep their status low key,so until it's necessary, the students wouldn't know who is or isn't armed. That would prevent a would be killer from being able to "work around" the armed teachers.
