GALT (AP) — A police officer in the Sacramento County city of Galt was shot and killed Tuesday after responding to a report of a burglary, authorities said.

The officer contacted a man who was about a block and a half away near railroad tracks around 11:30 a.m., according to Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos. An altercation ensued, and the officer called for emergency backup.

Ramos said the suspect pulled a handgun and shot at the officer and a second officer who responded. The first officer was struck and killed. The second officer was not hit.

The suspect also died, although Ramos said it was not clear whether he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was shot by police.

Neither the suspect nor the officer who died has been identified. Ramos said he did not know what led the officer to initially approach the suspect. The sheriff's department is investigating the incident.

Galt police told Sacramento television station KCRA that it's the department's first deadly on-duty officer shooting since it was formed in 1946.

Galt is a community of about 25,000 residents about 20 miles south of Sacramento.

The shooting comes less than two months after an animal control officer was shot and killed after being called to retrieve pets believed to have been left behind at a Galt home.

In that incident, authorities say 45-year-old Roy Marcum was killed when a man inside the home who had been served an eviction notice opened fire with a shotgun.
