WASHINGTON (AP) — A 31-year-old Army veteran who grew up on a ranch in the high Sierra has received the highest U.S. award for military valor.
President Obama presented the Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha on Monday at a tearful White House ceremony that also honored eight men who did not survive the Taliban's 2009 attack at an Army outpost in the mountains near the Pakistan border.
Obama said it was one of the most intense battles of the war in Afghanistan.
Romesha was born in Lake City, Calif. He grew up there along the California-Nevada line about 200 miles north of Reno until he joined the Army at age 18. He still has family living in Nevada's neighboring Washoe County.
