RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The slopes are open for skiing and snowboarding at many local resorts and this weekend's snow could help to open some more.
"We hope to open this week," said Mount Rose Ski Patrol Director Michael Ferrari. "We'll need some help from mother nature."
Ferrari says they hope to open Wednesday but need about another foot of snow. This snowy Saturday is a good start but it also makes for tricky travel.
You know you can't ski and enjoy the hill if you can't make it here on the roads.
Now that ski season is underway the bad news is sometimes you're going to have to drive through some pretty crazy winter weather to get out to the slopes. So it's important that you always have the right gear with you in case of an emergency.
"I keep a shovel. I keep an extra coat, an extra set of gloves," Ferrari said.
News 4 talked to skiiers and snowboarders at Bobo's Mogul Mouse and asked what they keep in case of an emergency on their way to hit the slopes.
"Power bars, water and blankets," Elizabeth Cliff said.
"I have tons of blankets in there and that's about it," Denton Earnhardt said.
"One of those scrapy things that scrapes the ice," Chuck Campbell said.
On roads like Mount Rose Highway, you have to remember to drive safely.
"If there's snow on the road, go a little slower," Ferrari said.
So leave early and remember safety doesn't end with the drive.
"There's a lot of dangers at the beginning of ski season," Denton said. "You have a lot of unmarked obstacles, snow barely covering rocks."
"An important tip is to ski with a partner," Ferrari said.
Make the most of the season by being safe on the roads and the mountains this winter.
