Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Students at Traner Middle School in Reno were thrilled to reunite with Cherice Stormfeltz, the soldier they had been writing to for months during her deployment in Afganistan.
Cherice's former teacher, Julie Begbie, came up with the pen pal idea. Cherice appreciated the thought, but never expected to receive so much love and support. In reference to the amount of letters the Traner students sent her, Cherice said, "They brought it!"
Cherice was also impressed with the students level of maturity, and awareness of what's happening around the world. Students became so comfortable with Cherice, that they began talking to her about life, in general, making her a "Big Sister" figure to many of them.
Julie created this pen pal system not only to comfort Cherice, but to teach her students life lessons. She said the system was meant to make her students "feel connected" to a Traner alumni achieving goals, and leading a positive life after middle school. Both students and teachers continue to be inspired by Cherice's story, and hope to find more enlisted Traner alumni to write.
