SPARKS, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Sparks City Manager Shaun D. Carey has announced Division Chief (DC) Tom Garrison as his choice to become the next Chief of the City’s Fire Department. DC Garrison will replace retiring Chief Andy Flock, who has held the position since April 2007.
City Manager Carey’s appointment of DC Garrison requires ratification by the Sparks City Council, which would be followed by a swearing-in ceremony upon confirmation, scheduled for the August 26 Sparks City Council Meeting. Garrison would become the 11th Fire Chief for the City.
Garrison joined the City of Sparks in June 1987 as a firefighter. He has since followed a career progression from firefighter to Fire Apparatus Operator to Captain and to Division Chief. Garrison’s current duties are focused on the administration and training functions for the city’s Fire Department. In addition to fire management and suppression experience, Garrison brings with him fire command, emergency management, and special teams’ expertise.
Garrison holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Nevada, Reno, an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology from the Truckee Meadow Community College, and additional training and certification from the National Fire Academy in the fields of Emergency Management, Incident Command, Planning, Leadership, and Hazardous Materials.
Garrison has served as a member of the Sparks Fire Department’s Honor Guard, Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team and Technical Rescue Team. Additionally, he has served as the department’s testing coordinator for ladders, breathing apparatus and hazardous materials monitoring equipment team. He and his wife Teresa have two adult sons.
