State Sen. Smith to head national lawmakers' group

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A high-ranking Democratic state senator from Sparks has been named president of a national association of state lawmakers.

Officials with the National Conference of State Legislatures announced that Debbie Smith was elected to head the group, which represents more than 7,000 state lawmakers and 20,000 legislative staff members.

The bipartisan organization switches between Democratic and Republican presidents each term.

Smith was elected vice president of the organization in 2012, and has served on the group's labor and economic development committee.

She was first elected to the Nevada Assembly in in 2000 and was elected to the Nevada Senate in 2012.
