RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Lake Tahoe woman who was attacked by a black bear in her backyard could become the first person in the area charged with illegally feeding the wild animals.

California wildlife officials say the woman has been feeding bears for years in her yard on the lake's north shore at Kings Beach.

Lt. Patrick Foy says the woman was treated for bite wounds to her shoulder after she reported the attack on Aug. 5. He says Placer County prosecutors will decide whether to cite her with a misdemeanor for feeding wildlife, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

A similar problem in nearby Incline Village prompted the Nevada Department of Wildlife to issue a formal warning in December to another woman accused of illegally feeding bears.

No offense, but an awful lot of generalizing here. I would consider myself an "environmentalist" and you'd probably call me a tree hugger but I know better than to feed wildlife. Just a guaranteed death sentence so please, don't lump us all together. We're all not as foolish as this woman appears to have been.

Anyone living around Tahoe should KNOW that all of the wildlife was there first. Big bad bear, coyotes, and mountain lion in the neighborhood. Expect it. DUH. You're trespassing on their territory. Fires? EXPECT IT.

A fed bear is a dead bear! I understand those that love bears(me included) have a responsibility to protect them. Leaving your garbage out, bird feeders and dog food dishes left for them to get into will only lead to them being euthanized. But feeding them? More harm than good. By the way, file the front sight off the 45-70, so when the bear shoves it up your a$$ it won't hurt so bad. I lived in the back country of Alaska for 3 years.....I know what I'm talking about!

And tree huggers can't figure out why people object to their beliefs? Probably they live in a dream world that everyone else is suppose to support.
