RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- We may know something soon about the Tesla deal. The Governor's Office is holding a news conference at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
No other details are being released. However, the Governor's Office is saying the news conference will be a major economic development announcement.
Several major news organizations, including CNBC, Forbes and Bloomberg are reporting Nevada has been selected as Tesla's site to build a $5 billion battery gigafactory. The factory would provide as many as 5,000 high-paying jobs. The agencies are also reporting significant Tesla executives, including President & CEO Elon Musk, will be attending.
If Nevada is selected, the gigafactory would be built in Storey County in the Reno-Tahoe Industrial Park.
Reno-Tahoe Industrial Park Developer Lance Gilman said he has heard the rumors and he cannot say anything. "I just received a call from the Governor's Office inviting me to the news conference. They told me to bring some of the folks from Storey County and that we're going to announce something to the world."
Gilman said secrecy behind these deals comes with the territory. "They don't want a lot of information out there. They're looking at their employees worrying about it, they're worried about their banking relationships and of course, the negotiating factor is very important to them."
While Gilman will not say a lot about Thursday's announcement, he believes the announcement will be positive news. "I'm excited beyond belief. They say that everybody gets 15 minutes on their life. I'm getting more than my share. That's what I would add."
News 4 contacted Senator Harry Reid's office to try to confirm the reports. The Senator's office referred us back to the Governor's Office.
Reno Mayor Bob Cashell said he has been invited to the news conference and is planning to go an hour earlier. He told News 4 the Governor requested him to arrive early to talk about the Tesla deal.
