Reno, NV (KRNV & - It's in with a new year and out with the old. Waste Management of Nevada is hosting its quarterly "Residential Dump Days" this weekend.

The waste transfer station is where unwanted, bulky household appliances and furniture meet their fate. Instead of illegally dumping these items on the sidewalk, several residents are taking advantage of waste management's "residential dump day."

“I had these two chairs. I’ve been wanting to get rid of them two months,” says Reno resident, Larry Whipkey.

Art Silva adds, “Things I’ve been procrastinating with. [Things that have] been sitting around in my shed.”

Waste Management is accepting things like hot water heaters and stoves, or mattresses and box springs.

“It helps people save money,” says Sarah Polito, Waste Management Representative. “So they can come here today and be able to dispose of their bulky waste for free. Or if they have other municipal solid waste, they get a reduced rate.”

That reduced rate is more than 50% for solid waste, such as yard clippings.

Washoe county and waste management partnered to offer this two-day event for residents, in hopes of curbing illegal dumping in the community. .

"Illegal dumping is an issue here in the Truckee Meadow,” says Polito. “So waste management has these residential dumpings so we can do our part in keeping this beautiful community that we live in clean and pristine for all the residents."

This event is for residents only and ends Sunday, January 5th.

Stead Transfer Station (13890 Mt. Anderson Road, Reno, NV 89506) will be open between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Commercial Row Transfer Station (1390 E. Commercial Row, Reno, NV 89512) will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The next “Residential Dump Day” will be held in April; just in time for spring cleaning.
