RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is currently recruiting reserve firefighters. They are looking for individuals that have some experience and are looking to expand their knowledge.

The program gives adults a chance to gain valuable firefighting and emergency medical services experience. Last fall, their pilot program was a success, so they are doing it again.

"It's a win, win situation for us, we get extra staffing, extra firefighters on our engines that help with the manpower needs of the district and emergencies," said Battalion Chief Alex Kukulus. "For them again, they get the experience, education, the training they couldn't get anywhere else."

Kukulus said reserve firefighters work just like a full-time firefighter, and get to develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities. "Checks up the apparatus and the equipment, cleaning the station, and training day to day, and then they'll be going to medical emergencies, structure fires, wild land fires, vehicle accidents, you name it."

Reserve firefighters are technically volunteers, but Kukulus said there are several benefits. "Ee do offer them a small stipend, which reimburses them for some of their training and uniform expenses and those sorts of things, so it's a nominal amount, certainly not something people would do for the money, but it helps them a little bit."

Kukulus also said many of the district's reserve firefighters are looking to eventually get officially hired, which he says is one of the main goals of the program. "They will stay with us as long as they want, we don't cut them off. Basically we want to train them, so we can hire them ourselves as full-time firefighters or a lot of them might get full-time jobs somewhere else."

The program is limited to 40 people. The selection process includes an exam, a physical agility test, an interview, and a background check. Applications are being accepted through May 4.
