TRUCKEE, Calif. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Truckee Police Department and Tahoe City have installed first the first permanent prescription drug collection bins.

The prescription bin at the Truckee Police Department will open on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and is located at the TPD inside Truckee Town Hall, located at 10183 Truckee Airport Road. It is available for drop-offs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. The Rx bin at PCSO is already open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. and is located at the Tahoe City Station at 2501 N. Lake Blvd. The Rx bins are open to individual residents of North Tahoe or Truckee only, not businesses or DEA registrants.

Residents can drop-off prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and pet medicines only. Sharps, aerosols (inhalers), or illegal drugs (marijuana, etc.) are not accepted. Medications can be placed inside the collection bins in their original containers, removing confidential information, leaving only the name of medication. Containers should not be larger than 5 inches in height, and not more than 3 inches in diameter. Sharps and aerosols can only be dropped off during specific Hazardous Waste days at the Eastern Regional Landfill, located on Hwy 89 and Cabin Creek Road in Truckee.
