Truckee resident dies in Navy helicopter crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ( & KRNV) -- The Department of Defense has confirmed that one of the two crew members who died in a helicopter crash off the coast of Virginia on Wednesday was from Truckee.

Petty Officer, Third Class Brian Collins, 25, died when his MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter crash-landed in the Atlantic Ocean during a training exercise. Military officials said the helicopter was forced to make an emergency water landing, although it was not initially clear what prompted the emergency landing.

Why is this "Breaking News"? The tragic death of a person is not "Breaking News". It's a sad event in the lives of friends and family and the NEWS MEDIA uses it only for ratings and to sale copy. Pure and simple. It's bad enough that he died in the service of his country and I feel for the family and friends that now have to take care of this. But the media needs to learn that they also have a responsibility to leave them alone in their time of grief. Not EXPLOIT IT for ratings. There's nothing that I can think of my that rips our hearts out when you attend the service at the gravesite for a service member/vet. When taps is blown and the gun salute is fired while a folded American Flag is handed to the widow, children or mother, I dare you to say how this is "breaking news"! USN, CPO, Ret
