Truckee, Calif. (KRNV, MyNews4.com) Lobster rolls, clambakes, and fresh seafood— not exactly the kind of fare you think of when a small mountain town like Truckee comes to mind. But for Shawn Whitney, the owner of Morgan’s Lobster Shack, it’s the only food he ever wanted to make.
The owners of Morgan’s Lobster Shack, located in historic Downtown Truckee, were told it could take up to a year and thousands of dollars to rebuild. With a little perseverance and a lot of help from the community they were able to rebuild.
“I guess I'm kind of selfish, I just wanted fresh fish,” says Whitney. “There are so many east coasters out here. The food is simple, it's fresh; it's all you want.”
Whitney and his wife Heather opened Morgan’s Lobster Shack back in June of 2013. After being open for just over a month, a fire in the kitchen destroyed the restaurant.
“I remember it was a Thursday night. 'Truckee Thursday' was going on. It had been our busiest night of the year. I left here at like10:30 p.m. in a great mood. I got a phone call at about 12:30 a.m. saying there was a fire in the restaurant.”
Now, just months later, thanks in part to a “GoFundMe” campaign, that raised more than ten thousand dollars, Morgan’s is ready to open its doors and feed the masses once again.
Whitney is incredibly grateful for the communities unwavering support. “Oh my god unbelievable,” he says. “Way more than I could imagine. I've been living here Just seeing people offering their services, offering their time. It was amazing.”
Shawn and Heather originally planned to reopen Morgan’s one month after the fire. However, they quickly realized that rebuilding their dream was going to take a lot more that just a positive attitude.
“It was rough, especially in the weeks afterword's,” says Whitney. “Dealing with the insurance, trying to figure out the cause. I'm a poor while boy trying to make it in a small town. I put everything I have into this place the first time, and then to make it happen twice in a year? It’s almost unfathomable.”
Shawn and Heather hope one day to open additional Morgan’s restaurants, but for now, they’re happy just to be eating good food, with great friends.
“There are a lot of familiar faces here. Everyone's saying how excited they are to have us back. For me, just being back working again, seeing the same faces, eating fresh fish again, lobster rolls and fish and chips, and all that good stuff that we have--I'm excited for it.”
All of the fish served at Morgan’s follows the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s guidelines for sustainable fisheries and their lobster is flown in from Maine daily.
Morgan’s Lobster Shack is located on 10087 West River Street in Truckee. Their hours are 11:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 9 p.m. on weekends. To learn more you can visit their Website: www.morganslobstershack.com.
