Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- There are only two doctors in Nevada who are specially certified in child abuse and neglect and they are based in Reno.
“If I don’t do it and no one else does it then these poor children fall through the cracks,” says Dr. Catherine Wagoner.
More than 5,000 children in Nevada were victims of abuse or neglect in 2011, according to the latest statistics from the Child Welfare League of America (http://www.cwla.org/programs/researchdata/default.htm).
“This particular area really is in a deficit, we definitely need more people who are willing to go forward with the additional training and expertise and willingness to deal with these types of cases,” says Dr. Catherine Wagoner.
Kristen Macleod and Catherine Wagoner are both general pediatricians and the only two doctors in Nevada who are specially certified in child abuse and neglect, a subspecialty that wasn’t recognized by the Board of Pediatrics until 2009.
Dr. Macleod was certified in 2011 and Dr. Wagoner just passed the board exam in November of 2013. Their additional training allows them to testify in court about child abuse cases and they also provide education to other doctors.
Though there are only two of them, Dr. Macleod says new collaborations with law enforcement, school officials and social services are leading to a brighter future for their field.
Dr. Macleod and Dr. Wagoner are both part of the Child Abuse and Response Evaluations Team (CARES) program in northern Nevada.
