FALLON, Nev. (AP) -- The Navy says a fighter jet that crashed during a training exercise in western Nevada is a total loss.

Lt. Reagan Lauritzen of Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Sunday that the pilot's condition is unknown.

It took rescue crews several hours to reach the wreckage of the F/A-18C jet on a Navy range training complex about 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon. Lauritzen says the name of the pilot will be withheld for 24 hours.

The jet crashed around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Helicopters and ground crews had difficulty reaching the crash site because of the mountainous terrain and remote location and a snow storm that hindered efforts.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
