LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei has defeated Democrat Samuel Koepnick to represent Nevada's 2nd Congressional District.

The 54-year-old Amodei was seeking a full two-year term Tuesday in the seat he won in a special election last year.

Amodei had been expected to easily defeat the 31-year-old Koepnick, a state information technology worker in Carson City.

The heavily Republican rural district stretches across northern Nevada from Reno to Elko. It lost vast parts of central Nevada to the newly created 4th District.

Amodei previously won seats in the state Assembly in 1996 and the state Senate from 1998 to 2010.

He served as chairman of the Nevada Republican Party until May 2011, when he won a special election for the seat vacated by Republican Dean Heller's appointment to the U.S. Senate.
