SPARKS, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Northern Nevada is playing host to a different kind of outdoor event this summer. Sparks and John Ascuaga's Nugget are partnering to bring new motorsports to our region.
The Wild West Motorsports Park hosts Lucas Oil Racing each summer, but this year, a competition series foreign to our area is calling the course home.
If you race or watch four-wheel drive UTV competitions, you know it is usually an unfamiliar sight. "There's not a lot of opportunities where you can be five minutes from a track like the Wild West Motor Park," said organizer Jeff Knoll.
Now, the park in Sparks is expanding its horizons.
Its 6,500-person capacity is enough to entice new entertainment, let alone being just minutes away from actual society. "We're so close," said Knoll. "Normally you have to travel quite a ways or these types of events you typically would camp out."
So, the site is hosting the Silver State's first-ever four-wheel drive UTV Jamboree this summer. The Nugget is partnering with the event to host all riders and guests from July 14-19. "These are people that probably wouldn't have come to northern Nevada or possibly to the Nugget otherwise," said Nugget CEO Carlton Geer.
Geer also said that his hotel-casino is expanding beyond events bringing clientele solely to Victorian Square. "This fit in perfectly from a time perspective, I happen to love cars, I think this is a good demographic for us."
Knoll added, "When I built the track, I didn't anticipate we'd be doing something like this."
The Wild West Motorsports Park said this new event could ignite further entertainment expansion, maybe even beyond racing in general.
Organizers expect the event to welcome thousands of visitors to our region, because almost 20% of the nation can travel to the track within just one day.
