FERNLEY, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- A Union Pacific Train carrying cargo from Sparks to Chicago struck and killed a man near Industrial St. in Fernley around 6:30 a.m.

According to Union Pacific Railroad Spokesperson Mark Davis, the man had kneeled down on the tracks in front of the train before he was struck. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is investigating and Davis tells News 4 that the train's track imaging recorder will be used as part of the investigation.

Lt. Johnny Smith with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office says the man had been talking about solving marital problems by "sitting on the tracks," and investigators say that's what he was doing when the train struck him.

The train crew were offered peer support counseling and accepted the offer. Davis says another train crew will take over the duties and continue to Chicago with the 86 cars.

The train was not derailed and none of the train crew were injured.

I heard the crew call this in to their dispatcher and saw their train rolling to a stop out my window. My prayers go out to the crew on the train that had to go thru that.
