RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- If you're looking for a special Christmas gift for a child in your life, a local family has turned their annual holiday tradition into a book that teaches a valuable lesson.
Back in 2006 the Hendersons set out to find the perfect tree and couldn't, but they didn't leave empty handed. They took home their first twisted christmas tree and seven years later it's a tradition that is inspiring others.
"My wife said jokingly 'why don't we get that one,'" Ryan Henderson said. "We laughed then we started thinking about it and we said why not."
Now it's an annual tradition.
"It kind of became a challenge to go out and find a unique looking tree," Julie Henderson said.
"Some of them were twisted, some of them were corkscrewed, some of them have four tops like this year's," Ryan said.
Julie said the best part happens once they get the tree home.
"Every year when we pull out all our ornaments, we have a lot of personalized ornaments," she said.
"You get the lights and everything on it," Ryan said. "It's pretty awesome to see. [We] took something that's untraditional and made it very cool and pretty."
The twisted trees are just a normal part of Christmas for their two sons.
"They like them," Ryan said. "I think they're going to struggle in school when they're told to draw a Christmas tree. They're going to be confused as to what it should look like."
Ryan took his own shot at drawing one when he illustrated The Twisted Christmas Tree, the Henderson's book that sat written but unpublished for years.
"We weren't actually even planning on selling it," Julie said. "It was just something we wanted for our family."
But now it is for sale on Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.
"It's just a nice little cute kind of ugly duckling story," Ryan said.
"It's a message to tell [kids] you don't have to be perfect," Julie said. "It's good to be unique, to celebrate being different."
