HAWTHORNE, Nev. (AP) — Hawthorne residents are raising money to benefit the families of the seven Marines who died in a training accident at the Army depot in their backyard.
The local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars raised more than $800 in contributions for artificial budding poppies they distributed Tuesday night at a memorial service that attracted nearly 300 people to a city park across from the Hawthorne Army Depot.
They plan another fundraiser Wednesday night with a spaghetti feed at the Refinery Restaurant.
John Stroud, the national junior vice commander in chief for the VWF, says there's not much local residents can do while the military investigates the cause of the tragic accident other than help provide comfort and care to the victims' families.
