RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- News 4 has learned that Washoe County School District Police Chief Mike Mieras was fired from his position Friday.

Mieras served as the WCSD Police Chief for 12 years and he was employed with the district for a total of 20 years.

News 4 has obtained a statement from Mieras in regard to his termination:

"I have worked for five different superintendents over a 20 year period and have had an unblemished record. It has always been positive. I am not just disappointed in the decision, I am also hurt. I was not given a reason [for my termination], I was simply told by superintendent Pedro Martinez in a meeting on Friday that the district is going in a different direction and my services were no longer needed."

Public Information Officer Victoria Campbell was unaware of Mieras' termination when News 4 contacted her. After investigating, the Washoe County School District sent the following statement:

"In an effort to improve operations and support for schools in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), Superintendent Pedro Martinez has restructured a number of departments in the District. Those departments have already included English Language Learners (ELL), Special Education, the Office of School Performance, and now the WCSD School Police Department.

Part of the restructuring effort in the School Police Department has included a change in leadership for the department. We would like to thank Mike Mieras for his years of service to the staff and students of the Washoe County School District as Chief of School Police.

The WCSD and Mike Mieras have committed to continue discussing retirement possibilities while Mr. Mieras is on vacation."

As for his pension, getting fired does not take his pension away, he earned it and it is his. I think the lawsuit he should file wuld equal more than his pension and leave him set for life!!

Time for Pedro to get back on his donkey and head back to Mexico.

Perhaps he was fired because he is coming closer to a retirement age and the school district decided to remove him so they will not have to pay him a retirement wage many public servants get instead of social security or along with social security. It happens all the time, they fire the older more expensive employee who will receive retirement benefits and hire a new young cheaper person. Very Nasty Business practice :P

I like the comment "Nevadans get fired all the time for no reason" by (screen name) "nu beginnings" (sic) U gotta love this seeming contradiction. New beginnings, my boot. I also have known mike for 15 years and this is a bunch of bs. He is a dedicated police officer and brought the school district to the 21 century. I sent emails to the school board and got a response from one that was quite" shocked" and had no knowledge of this. Well if we were moving in a different direction wouldn't the school board know that direction. Taxpayers email or call the school board and voice your opinion.

I have also known Mike for years and this is total crap! He has put 20 years of sweat and toil into the school district. He moved the department from a bunch of security guards with no guns and little police powers to a 21st century police department that is equipped to handle the violence and threats of our schools and society. Mike is a dedicated "Cop" who deserves better for the years of service he has dedicated to our children and community. Pedro is the one that needs to go. He is a lacky and mouthpiece to the corrupt teacher's union.

I've known Mike Miers a Long time and it's hard to believe that Martinez could take such a bold step. Martinez is looking to take this into a different direction, maybe a brother-in-law to fill the position??? Or was Mike just not the right nationality?

So what's the problem. Nevada is a right to hire or fire state without any reason for firing. The Chief should know the law and what makes him special when Nevadans get fired all the time for no reason.

This is crap, send the Superintendent packing, he is not a part of Northern Nevada anyway. If there were problems with Chief Mieras then there should be a discipline history. I have never heard of one. So who is he going to put in as a new Chief? This situation stinks like a bowl of guacamole gone bad.

I personally think this is so wrong. Mike is a great man. And not to give him any reason really sucks.
