RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Washoe County School Board of Trustees member Dave Aiazzi is stepping down from his position, according to published reports.

Aiazzi has been diagnosed with leukemia, and in response, Superintendent Pedro Martinez released the following statement:

"I am truly sorry to hear the news about trustee Dave Aiazzi's diagnosis. I have always appreciated his commitment to public service. He has spent many years advocating for our community and the arts programs that make this such a wonderful place to live."

According to documents, if a board position opens, the remaining members will appoint someone until the next general election. This will also be decided through public meetings. Recall efforts against Dave Aiazzi are on-going throughout the community -- this obviously not the route intended.

RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- In response to Thursday's reports of Washoe County School District Trustee Dave Aiazzi's diagnosis of leukemia, Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez released a statement praising Aiazzi's work in the community. It said:

"I am truly sorry to hear the news about Trustee Dave Aiazzi's diagnosis. I have always appreciated his committment to public service. He has spent many years advocating for our community and the arts programs that make this such a wonderful place to live.

"I join with the men and women of the Washoe County School District in sending our thoughts and best wishes to Dave, Delores, and their family."

News 4 has not confirmed the reports of Aiazzi's diagnosis, nor confirmed the report of Aiazzi resigning from the Board of Trustees.

If there is a vacancy on the board, the other Board members will appoint someone to fill the vacant seat. The appointee will serve until the next general election, at which time the successor must be elected for the balance of the unexpired term.
