WELLS, Nev. (AP) — A high school agriculture teacher from northeast Nevada is being honored nationally for his accomplishments both in and outside the classroom.

Wells High teacher Don Norda has been named one of six national teachers of the year by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. The group recognizes leadership in civic, community, agriculture/agribusiness and professional activities.

The award comes with a one-year lease on a 2014 Toyota Tundra Limited.

In his 21 years of teaching, Norda's Future Farmers of America class has won 142 state contests. He also coaches softball and cross-country, has chaired the Ducks Unlimited chapter for 10 years and is president of the Elko County Classroom Teachers Association.

He told the Elko Daily Free Press it's an honor to be recognized by his peers.
